It looks like we got extremely lucky, with minimal effects from hurricane Florence in the Northern Outer Banks. As of right now, the mandatory evacuation for both Dare and Currituck counties is still in effect. The Elan Vacations staff is preparing to assess homes, when the county allows us to do so. We will keep you informed as we get updates.

Beach Erosion - Latest Update

The Outer Banks experienced several back to back Nor’Easters from the last couple of days of February into mid March. The beaches across the entire area took a significant beating with damage to the dunes and walkways all along the coast.

The latter part of March and into Easter did not bring much relief either so you will see several areas where the dunes are cut out and private and public walkways are in need of rebuilding. Areas in Duck maintained the sand that was replenished during Beach Nourishment last year but walkways are covered, and some buried.

All communities and HOAs along the coast are in the process of rebuilding the public walkways. They are updating the property management companies as they progress letting us know what walkways are open and which ones are still in need of repair. We will update as we are given the status. Areas that we have heard from are as follows:

  • Crownpoint in Corolla: 2 of the 3 walkways have to be rebuilt – the South walkway is intact and usable. They expect the other 2 to be completed sometime mid May.

  • Villages of Ocean Hill: the most northern walkway on Sandcastle is intact and no damage – the 3 southern walkways did sustain damages. They are working on them.

  • Town of Duck has issued an ordinance that no hard structures can be built over the dune top or east side of the dune at this time. As mentioned before, most walkways are covered by sand.

We are doing everything we can to make the necessary repairs so that our guests will be able to enjoy the beaches this season. Please be patient as this process takes place.
