It is that time of year again and here on the OBX, we are ready to celebrate the Christmas with dozens of family-friendly events and activities. From Duck to Hatteras there is something for everyone this holiday season. With your OBX Vacation home, you're in the ideal location to enjoy some or all of these activities. With tons of great vacation homes to choose from, we're sure you'll have a wonderful holiday here on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Here are the best events that you won't want to miss.
Head over to Manteo on Roanoke Island and visit the beautiful Elizabethan Gardens. With or without the lights the Elizabeth Gardens are a wonderful place to visit. From November 25 to January 20, 2018, come join The Elizabethan Gardens for the opening celebration of WinterLights, a spectacular twenty-two-night event of holiday lights and sights. Find holiday warmth and charm inside and out with festive food and drink in the "Embellished” Hall and cozy fire pits on the Great Lawn as well as seasonal gift shop and plant sales. Funded in part by the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau all the proceeds go towards the Elizabethan Gardens. This great event is a wonderful family event with lots of great picture opportunities you won't want to miss.

If you have not had a chance to visit the historic small town of Manteo during your OBX vacation then now is the time. On Saturday, December 2, 13th annual Holiday Tour of Homes sponsored by the Manteo Preservation Trust is taking place throughout Manteo. This charming tour takes you back in time as you tour several historic homes. Included on the tour this year are several new construction homes using "The Manteo Way of Building" and a renovated building that is purposed as a home and business.
Outer Banks Craft Distilling at 510 Budleigh Street serves as the check-in for the tour. You can buy tickets the day of the tour beginning at 11:30 AM (tour starts at noon). Tickets are $20 per person. Maps are provided. Light refreshments will also be offered here (not at the tour locations).
One great way to enjoy the tour is by bicycle. If interested the Manteo Cyclery will be on hand, supplying use of their bikes for anyone that wants to tour by bike. Bikes are limited so this will be offered as first-come, first-served. Don't forget to pick up one of the commemorative ornaments that will be on sale and are a great way to commemorate your day in Manteo. All of the proceeds from this event go to the Manteo Preservation Trust for the purpose of preserving the history and buildings of this quaint coastal village.
There lots of iconic symbols of the Outer Banks. However perhaps none is as well recognized as the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and now for one day, only you can take a tour of this beautiful lighthouse. Here are some of the details that you won't want to miss.
The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will be open to the public for a free holiday climb on Saturday, December 9, 2017, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Volunteers from the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society and park rangers from Cape Hatteras National Seashore look forward to greeting local residents and visitors at the lighthouse. Children who wish to climb the lighthouse must be at least 42” tall, and children under 12 years of age must be escorted by a person at least 16 years old.Climbing the lighthouse is strenuous and is equivalent to climbing a 12-story building. This lighthouse climb is part of the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau OBXmas Weekends initiative highlighting Outer Banks holiday events. National parks are public lands managed by the National Park Service. They offer experiences and educational opportunities for all to enjoy.
No trip to the OBX no matter the season would be complete without a trip to Hatteras. This small fishing town is chalked full of history and you are sure to feel like you stepped back in time to a slower more romantic time on the coast when fishing and whaling were a way of life. Hatteras continues its tradition of family-friendly events with an old fashion Christmas parade. For warm, hometown, holiday spirit, this is an event that no one should miss. After the parade and as twilight draws nigh, Santa is transported throughout the village on one of the local fire trucks wishing holiday cheer to all the local youngsters as well as to those who are young at heart. Take some time and plan on spending the day in this quaint town getting to know Hatteras...you won't be disappointed.
Leave it to the folks at Kitty Hawk Kites to combine the OBX's connection to the history of aviation with Christmas at this unique family fun event. On November 24 and 25, head over tor Jockey's Ridge Crossing for lots of great activities. Here is just a glimpse of the fun. Pictures with Santa take place on November 24, from 10am to 2pm and continue on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. Stik around on Satruday from 4 to 6pm there will be 15 to 30 foot kites swirling about thenight sky illuminated with Christmas lights. Shorly after at 5 pm the Jockey's Ridge State Park solar Christmas tree lighting takes place kicking off the offical start of the Christmas season at Jockey's Ridge. All events are free and open to the public.
the Town of Duck businesses have something for everyone on your shopping list! Pick-up a "Great Yuletide Elf Hunt Passport” at select locations, then shop and stroll through Duck Village from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2017. Bring your completed passport to the Yuletide Celebration at Duck Town Park to receive a gift for children and be entered into a drawing for gift baskets full of Duck Merchant goodies and gift cards. Holiday music will be provided by the Just Playn’ Dixieland, band. There will be loads of tasty treats from local Duck businesses, and the lighting of the Crab Pot tree in preparation for Santa’s arrival on the Duck Firetruck. Make sure to have your camera ready for pictures with Santa. You may spot the First Flight High School Chorus roving around town caroling, ending up at the Town Park for Santa’s arrival. This is a great way to knock out some of that Christmas shopping list and getting to enjoy some holiday cheer at that same time.
